The market median is calculated from prices that sellers publicly advertise, which we collect from many websites and plate marketplaces across the country, and then take the median of a group of comparable plates. The comparison starts with plates of the same number in the same market, and the prices of plates in other series are first adjusted to be equivalent to the series of the plate you are viewing. This figure is an asking price for reference, not an actual closing sale price.
A graphic auction plate is one whose price is set by competition in an official auction, and it is treated as property that can be transferred, given away or passed on as an inheritance, which gives it a clear market value. A standard white plate obtained by reserving a number in the regular round is tied to the vehicle and cannot be transferred separately, so it has almost no separate value. The white plates that can be bought and sold are those already registered to a vehicle, which change hands through a plate swap within the same area or by transferring the whole vehicle.
No. The price shown with each plate is the price the seller has set, and it is negotiable. The market median of the comparable plates is a reference point that lets buyers and sellers see where that price sits in the market before deciding. The actual price may be higher or lower depending on how much the buyer likes the plate, the letter series, and how the negotiation goes.
