Bidding yourself versus buying from a dealer: what's the difference?
Bidding yourself means taking part directly in a Department of Land Transport (DLT) auction round. The advantage is that if there is little competition, you may get the number at the starting price. The limitations are that you have to wait for a round, put down a deposit as required, and nothing guarantees you will get the number you want, because it depends on who else is bidding.
Buying from a dealer means buying from someone who already holds the number. The advantages are that you can see the actual plate, you know the asking price clearly, and you get the number you want immediately without waiting for a round. The trade-off is that the asking price usually already includes the middleman's margin, which is why you should have a reference figure in hand before starting the conversation.
This site is not a dealer and does not sell plates. We gather sellers' listings in one place and calculate the market median of comparable plates for you. The figures you see are the prices sellers have set, with nothing added by us, along with a median to show where that price sits in the market.
Step one: shortlist numbers and check their meanings before getting in touch
Start by setting three clear boundaries: the vehicle type you will use it on, the maximum budget you are willing to pay, and the principle you follow, whether that is a well-graded digit sum, a number that does not clash with your Kalakini, or a combination based on Chinese beliefs. These three filters can cut thousands of plates down to a few dozen in minutes.
Then open the detail page of each shortlisted plate and read the score breakdown, to see whether the score comes from the digit sum, the digit pairs or Chinese combinations. If you enter your birth day, the system warns you immediately when a plate contains a letter or digit that clashes with your Kalakini.
We recommend saving two or three plates you like to your favourites, not just one, because vanity plates often attract several interested buyers at once. Having backups means you do not have to rush into a price you are not happy with.
Step two: register your interest and wait for the listing to be checked
Press the contact button on the plate's page and enter your name, phone number and a short message, or message us in chat with a link to the plate you are interested in. The system gives you a reference code for following up. Getting in touch at this stage commits you to nothing and involves no payment.
What happens next is that our team helps check whether the listing is still open, then passes your interest to the seller along with your contact details. This is necessary because vanity plate prices can move during the day and listings can close at any time.
If the listing closes first, we will tell you straight away and point you to plates with a similar number, digit sum or pattern to compare. The market median for the original group can still be used as your budget guide.
Step three: confirm the price, prepare the paperwork, then pay the deposit
Once confirmed, you should receive three things in writing: the final price of the plate, an estimate of the government fees payable at actual cost, and the timeframe for the process. If a dealer refuses to provide this before taking your money, step back.
A good reservation confirmation should state at least four things: details that clearly identify the plate, the deposit amount and the due date for the balance, the cancellation and refund terms, and the legal entity name and commercial registration number of the party receiving payment.
Payment should go only into an account in the name of the seller's legal entity. Never transfer to an employee's personal account, whatever reason is given, and keep every transfer slip and receipt. This site does not accept payment for plates. If anyone uses our name to ask you for a transfer, stop and contact us immediately.
Step four: complete the process at the land transport office and collect the plate
You prepare the documents for your car: the original vehicle registration book, your national ID card with a copy, and a power of attorney if someone else will file on your behalf. For a company, add an up-to-date company certificate and a copy of the authorised director's ID card. If the car is under finance, you must first obtain consent and the registration book from the finance company, which is usually the step that takes the longest.
Booking an appointment and filing at the land transport office is something you agree with the seller. Ask clearly who will file and what the service fee is. Once the process is complete, you can choose to collect the plate and documents yourself or have them delivered to the address you provided.
The job is done when you have received all three: the new plate, the vehicle registration book with the details updated, and the receipt for the government fees. If any one of these is missing, do not close the matter yet.
Questions to ask a dealer before transferring money
When was this plate's status last checked, and has it been confirmed with the holder? If the answer is vague, it has not been checked.
What does the quoted price include and exclude, especially government fees and document delivery? Ask for an itemised breakdown.
If the process fails, how will you be refunded and within how many days? Ask for this to be stated in writing, not just agreed verbally.
What is the name of the legal entity receiving payment, and does it have a commercial registration number and an address you can verify? This is the most important question for screening out untrustworthy sellers from the start.

FAQ on this topic
Do I need to own a car before buying a plate?
In practice you need a car to register the number to, because a registration number must always be tied to a vehicle. If you are about to take delivery of a new car, tell the seller your delivery date from the start so the timing of the process can be planned to match.
After reserving, can I change my mind and pick a different number?
If you have not agreed anything with the seller yet, you can change your mind at any time at no cost, because registering interest on this site does not bind you to anyone. If you have already agreed terms and paid money to the seller, any change or cancellation follows the seller's stated conditions, so always ask for those conditions in writing before transferring money.
How long does it take from reservation to receiving the plate?
If the documents are ready and the car has no outstanding encumbrance, it usually takes a few working days from the date of filing. If the car is under finance, add the time spent waiting for documents from the finance company. Ask the seller to estimate the timeframe before you agree, and to update you when the status changes.
