Plates have no standard price, so value them by market comparison
Vanity plates have no official reference price published by any agency, and Thailand has no licensed plate appraisers. Most people who offer to appraise or buy plates are plate dealers who are themselves buyers and sellers, so they have a built-in conflict of interest. Anyone who wants to know what a plate should cost therefore has to value it themselves, or at least have their own figure to compare against.
The practical method is market comparison. Start by finding actual auction results and asking prices for similar plates, then adjust for the differences: letter series, province, vehicle type, digit sum and the age of the data. Finally, summarise the result as a price range, not a single figure. Plate brokers in the United Kingdom also estimate prices from past sales on the same principle.
This site's price calculator is free to use and automates the comparison step: it finds a group of comparable plates from the asking prices we have collected, then reports the market median and the typical price range. The other steps in this article, such as checking the plate's status and deducting transaction costs, you need to check yourself or ask the seller directly.
Step 1: Check the plate type and status before thinking about price
A price only means something if the plate can actually be traded. First check whether it is an auction plate, a special plate bearing a word, or an ordinary white plate. An auction plate is a right that can be transferred, resold and passed on as inheritance. A white plate obtained by reserving a number for free is tied to the vehicle and cannot be transferred separately, so it has almost no separate value.
Then check the status of that particular plate: has the auction price been paid in full, has it been registered to a vehicle yet, how many days remain before the 180-day deadline counted from the day the auction was won, which province the plate belongs to, and which vehicle type it is for. A plate with unpaid amounts or close to its deadline should be heavily discounted. Details are in the article on plate status and the pre-purchase checklist.
| Type | Source | Transferable separately from the vehicle | Market value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard-series auction plate (graphic plate) | Auctioned by the Department of Land Transport (DLT) and the Road Safety Fund | Yes | Tens of thousands to tens of millions of baht |
| Special plate (word plate, e.g. รวย 9999) | Special auction, starting prices ฿500,000 to ฿1,500,000 | Yes | Hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of baht |
| Second-hand auction plate | Plate dealers | Yes | Asking prices are published |
| White plate from number reservation | Reserved free through the DLT | No | Almost no separate value |
| Motorcycle plate | Auctioned in some provinces | Depends on type | A much smaller market |
Step 2: Group the number and use the auction starting price as a floor
First classify the plate's number into a group, such as single digit, double digits, triple digits, four of a kind, ascending run, mirrored (xyyx) and alternating (xyxy). The Department of Land Transport sets auction starting prices by these groups, and the secondary market prices plates by the same groups. The fewer the digits and the more they repeat, the higher the price.
The auction starting price is a minimum, not the plate's value. Four of a kind in a standard series in Bangkok starts at ฿100,000 according to a table that still needs checking against each round's announcement, yet plate 3ขข 3333 closed at ฿4,000,000, or 40 times the starting price, in the June 2025 auction. Use the starting price as a floor the price will not go below, then compare with actual closing prices for numbers in the same group. The tables and caveats are in the article on auction starting prices.
Step 3: Calculate the digit sum, but do not overweight it
The digit sum is the sum of the series prefix digit, the values of the letters and every digit, with letters converted to numbers using a Thai numerology table. For example, 2กต 9898 gives 2 plus 1 plus 3 plus 9 plus 8 plus 9 plus 8, which equals 40. Some schools add only the digits, so results can differ. This site's calculator is free to use and shows the value of every character so you can check it.
The digit sum is a belief and a secondary price factor. Large dealers put lucky digit sums next to the price, but the spread within the same number set is much smaller than the effect of the series. People who study this market estimate that a good digit sum adds about 10 to 20 percent within the same group, which is an inference from asking prices, not a statistical measurement. Read more in the article on digit sums and price.
Step 4: Assess the letter series and province
The letter series is the biggest price adjuster. The same number pattern in different series can differ in price by about 3 to 10 times. An example from one dealer's asking price list on 29 September 2026: 4ขบ 1 was listed at ฿399,000, while สฎ 1, an old two-letter series, was listed at ฿3,990,000. Old series, double-letter series and series whose prefix digit matches the plate's number are clearly more expensive than ordinary new series.
Province is the next adjuster. Auction starting prices in Bangkok are about 1.7 to 3 times those in the regions, and because auctions are held separately by province and vehicle type, we infer that a plate can be used on a vehicle of the same type in the same province, although we have not found a text that states this explicitly. The buyer base for provincial plates is therefore much narrower than for Bangkok. Passenger cars (รย.1) are the main market, while vans and pickup trucks have fewer buyers.
Step 5: Find at least 5 comparable plates
Always start with the same number pattern, then find at least 5 plates whose series and province are as close as possible. Data sources come in layers: actual Department of Land Transport auction results, which are the most reliable, asking price lists from multiple plate dealers, and price statistics websites. Social media groups are useful for seeing how much supply exists, but their prices are not reliable.
Adjust for series, province, digit sum and time, using data from within 12 to 24 months, because the special plate market has cooled since 2023 and older data may not reflect the current market. This site's calculator does this step for you: it counts only prices still visible within the freshness threshold we set, and always tells you which level of group the market median comes from and how many plates it is based on.
Steps 6 and 7: Set a price range, then deduct costs and liquidity
Summarise as three values. The low value is the price a dealer pays to buy, the middle value is the price end users actually pay, and the high value is the dealer's asking price. The asking price already includes the dealer's profit, so the dealer buying price is much lower, although no data on that spread has been published.
People who study the market suggest deducting a liquidity discount of about 20 to 40 percent from the asking price for ordinary new series, and about 10 to 25 percent for rare numbers. These figures are an assumption, not published data. Use them as a starting point when negotiating, and ask at least three dealers for buying prices to compare.
Actual transaction costs are small. The fees for transferring a vehicle and swapping plates are minor compared with the plate's price, and special plates priced at ฿500,000 or more carry an extra service charge. The big cost is therefore the dealer's price spread. Check current rates with the Department of Land Transport before every transfer.
Three worked examples
The examples below use hypothetical plates to show the order of reasoning. Comparison prices come from one dealer's asking price list on 29 September 2026, and the deductions are assumptions following steps 6 and 7, not prices guaranteed to be achievable in a real sale.
The third case differs from the first two because the problem is not the price but the plate's status. A white plate obtained by reservation is tied to the vehicle. Anyone who wants this number in a transferable form has to wait for a new series to be auctioned, and numbers in this group in the regions start at only a few thousand baht. The results of the first two cases are ranges, not single figures, and they narrow as more comparison data becomes available.
| Hypothetical plate | Comparison data | Adjustment | Estimated range |
|---|---|---|---|
| A new-series plate in Bangkok with the number 1234, e.g. 6กX 1234 | Plate 3ขห 1234 listed at ฿150,002 (old series listed at ฿289,000 to ฿320,000, not a direct comparison) | Deduct about 10 percent for an unremarkable digit sum, and 20 to 40 percent for liquidity | ฿80,000 to ฿120,000 |
| An old-series plate in Bangkok with the number 888, e.g. ฌX 888 | Plates ฌถ 888 and ฌษ 888 listed at ฿2,490,002, plate ศอ 888 listed at ฿2,690,002 | Deduct 10 to 25 percent for liquidity; if the digit sum is very good, use the top of the range | ฿1.9 million to ฿2.3 million |
| A Chiang Mai white plate in a two-letter series with the number 4567, e.g. กข 4567 | No comparison data, because it cannot be transferred separately from the vehicle | No adjustment | Separate value close to zero |

FAQ on this topic
Can I value a plate myself, or do I need an appraiser?
You can value it yourself, because Thailand has no licensed plate appraisers. Most people who offer appraisals are dealers who buy or sell themselves, so they have a conflict of interest. If you want a buying price, ask three or more dealers, then compare with Department of Land Transport auction results. This site's price calculator helps you find comparable prices for free.
How many comparable plates do I need?
At least 5. The more closely the number pattern, series and province match, the more reliable the result. If you find fewer than that, treat the result as a wide range. This site's calculator will not give a verdict on whether a price is cheap or expensive when the comparison group has too few samples, and it shows the confidence level of the price range.
Is the calculator's price the price I should pay?
No. The market median the calculator shows is the median of asking prices, so it is closer to the high end of the price range than the low end. Actual sale prices are usually lower because of negotiation and liquidity. Use it as a starting point for negotiation, and check the plate's status and documents alongside it.
