What are Thongchai and Athibodi days?
In the Thai astrological calendar, each year has four kinds of special days called Kalayok (กาลโยค): the Thongchai day (วันธงชัย, day of victory) and the Athibodi day (วันอธิบดี, day of authority), which are considered good days, and the Ubat day (วันอุบาทว์, day of misfortune) and the Lokawinat day (วันโลกาวินาศ, day of ruin), on which the texts advise avoiding auspicious undertakings. Thai people commonly use a Thongchai or Athibodi day as the auspicious time (ฤกษ์) to take delivery of a car, have it blessed and start important work.
These sets of days change with the Chula Sakarat year (จุลศักราช), so they are not the same every year, and they change on Thaloeng Sok Day (วันเถลิงศก), not on 1 January. As a result, 2027 (B.E. 2570) has two sets within one year.
The 2027 sets of days, before and after Thaloeng Sok
From the start of the year until 20:52 on Friday 16 April 2027, which is Chula Sakarat 1388, the Thongchai day is Monday and the Athibodi day is Saturday.
After Thaloeng Sok, when the Chula Sakarat changes to 1389, the Thongchai day is Thursday, the Athibodi day is Sunday, the Ubat day is Wednesday and the Lokawinat day is Tuesday. This set applies from mid-April to the end of the year, according to the astrological calendar calculated in advance.
| Day | Role in Kalayok | Traditional advice |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | Thongchai day | Suitable for auspicious undertakings |
| Sunday | Athibodi day | Suitable for auspicious undertakings |
| Wednesday | Ubat day | Best avoided |
| Tuesday | Lokawinat day | Best avoided |
| Monday, Friday, Saturday | No notable role in Kalayok | Usable as normal; check other restrictions as well |
Compare with the Kalakini day of your own birth day
Some schools hold that your auspicious day must not fall on the day of your Kalakini (กาลกิณี) planet under Taksa (ทักษา). For example, people born on Sunday should not hold auspicious undertakings on a Friday, and people born on Monday should not hold them on a Sunday. To find the day of your Kalakini planet, look up the planet in the Kalakini position of your birth day's Taksa table, then convert it to that planet's day.
The table below sums this up for all eight birth days. You can see that people born on Wednesday night have Thursday as their Kalakini day, which coincides with this year's Thongchai day, so they should choose the Athibodi day instead. People born on Monday have Sunday as their Kalakini day, which coincides with the Athibodi day, so they should choose the Thongchai day instead. People born on other days coincide with neither.
| Birth day | Day of your Kalakini planet | Thongchai or Athibodi day that falls on your Kalakini day |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Friday | Neither |
| Monday | Sunday | Athibodi day (Sunday) |
| Tuesday | Monday | Neither |
| Wednesday (daytime) | Tuesday | Neither |
| Wednesday (night) | Thursday | Thongchai day (Thursday) |
| Thursday | Saturday | Neither |
| Friday | Wednesday night (Rahu) | Neither |
| Saturday | Wednesday (daytime) | Neither |
Car delivery timing and the day you receive your plate
An auspicious time to take delivery of a car generally means the day you receive the car or have it blessed, while license plates go through an official process. The day you can actually do it therefore depends on the working days and queue at the land transport office you use. If the auspicious day is not a working day, most people move to a nearby day, or have the car blessed on the auspicious day and collect the plate on a convenient day.
Details such as auspicious hours or exact times, other restrictions such as Buddhist holy days or the dark moon day, and individual cases are treated differently by each school, so consult an expert you trust. All of this is belief and guarantees nothing, and you should not delay taking delivery of a car to the point of losing out financially or on safety just to wait for a particular day.
