Why Chinese tradition reads numbers by their sound
Chinese has many homophones, so the way a number is pronounced can easily sound like a word with another meaning. When we talk about Chinese lucky numbers, we are not talking about adding up digits as in Thai numerology. We are talking about whether a combination, read aloud, sounds like a blessing or a word people like to hear.
This belief came to Thailand with the Chinese community and became commonplace in business. Numbers that are good by Chinese belief are therefore often used for shop phone numbers, house numbers and the car plates of business owners.
The advantage of this approach is that it is easy to understand and can be applied straight away without looking anything up. Its limitation is that it depends on dialect and accent: a number that sounds good in one dialect may not carry the same meaning in another. It is best treated as a belief, not a fixed rule.
What each digit means
The 8 is the most sought-after digit because its pronunciation is close to a word meaning prosperity or wealth. The 9 follows near the top because it sounds like a word meaning long-lasting and enduring. These two are the main reason plates such as 8888 and 9999 are clearly more expensive than other four-of-a-kind numbers.
The 6 stands for smoothness and good fortune, 3 for birth and growth, and 2 for ease and things coming in pairs. The 1 is considered neutral, suggesting a beginning and being one.
The 5 can be read two ways depending on context: as meaning yourself, or as meaning not having, depending on the digits around it. The 7 and 0 are considered neutral leaning negative in some contexts, while 4 is avoided by some Chinese communities because it sounds like the word for death.
To be clear, the view of 4 is a cultural belief, not a fact that causes harm to anyone. Many Thais even use 4 as their own lucky number, because in Thai numerology 4 is tied to Mercury, which is strong in negotiation and trade.
Popular combinations and where their meanings come from
168 is the most famous combination. Read aloud, it sounds like a phrase meaning prosperity all the way along the road. It suits cars especially well because the meaning is directly about travel. 1688 builds on it by adding another layer of prosperity.
888 repeats the word for prosperity three times, and 8888 repeats it four times. In market terms it is a number that is both rare and in demand at the same time, so it is always expensive, just like 999 and 9999, which stand for the greatest endurance.
289 stands for success that comes easily and lasts, and 918 for prosperity that is about to arrive. 520 and 1314 are popular with younger buyers because they sound like a declaration of love and the phrase for a whole lifetime, so they are more often chosen as gifts than for financial reasons.
This site's system detects these combinations directly from the sequence of digits on the plate. When it finds one, it shows the combination's name with an explanation and states how many points it adds or subtracts, while capping the total for this part so it cannot swing enough to drown out the other dimensions.
Combinations Chinese tradition tends to avoid
Combinations with several 4s are the ones some Chinese communities avoid most, followed by combinations mixing 7 and 4 and combinations that, read aloud, sound like phrases with bad meanings.
We present this information purely as the beliefs of one cultural group. We do not use threatening language and do not claim that any number causes accidents or loss. If you do not follow Chinese beliefs, these combinations may even be a good opportunity, because they are usually cheaper than plates with the same pattern using other digits.
The final digit outweighs the first, and the Flying Star period
Chinese tradition holds that the last digit is the final outcome, so this site's scoring gives the last digit more weight than the first. That is why 1888 and 8881, which use the same digits, do not receive the same Chinese score.
Another layer is Flying Star (ดาวเหิน), a system that divides time into twenty-year periods. We are currently in Period 9, which covers 2024 to 2043. The digits 9, 1 and 8 are considered to receive the energy of this period, so the system gives a small bonus when the final digit is one of them, with a note that this is an interpretation based on the Flying Star period, not a fixed rule, and that it will change when a new period begins.
When Thai and Chinese numerology give different answers
The most common case is a plate with a 4, which the Chinese side may score negatively while the Thai side may see it as Mercury's digit, strong in negotiation. Or the reverse: a plate full of 8s that the Chinese side loves, but whose Thai digit sum falls into a group the texts suggest thinking twice about.
This site does not insist on which side you should believe, so it offers three calculation modes: Thai only, Chinese only, and mixed, which is the default. The system remembers the mode you choose on your own device.
Our practical advice is to pick the mode that matches your beliefs as the main guide from the start, and use the other side as supporting information, rather than trying to find a plate that scores highly on both sides at once, because such plates are few and usually priced higher than they should be.

FAQ on this topic
Should I never buy a plate with a 4?
There is no rule against it. The view of 4 is a belief among some Chinese communities that comes from a homophone, not a fact that affects anyone. In Thai numerology, 4 is tied to Mercury, which is strong in trade and negotiation. If you do not follow Chinese beliefs, plates with a 4 are often better value than plates with the same pattern using other digits.
Which is better, 168 or 888?
They differ in meaning, not in how good they are. 168 speaks of prosperity all along the road, which suits a car directly, while 888 reinforces prosperity and is usually more expensive because it is a rarer repeated number. On a limited budget, 168 is usually available at a much more accessible price.
Which positions does the system check for combinations?
It checks the full sequence of digits on the plate, whether a combination is at the start, in the middle or at the end. The resulting points are then combined with position weighting, so a combination that ends exactly on the final digit has a bigger effect on the score.
How long will Period 9 last?
Period 9 covers 2024 to 2043 according to the Flying Star system's divisions. When the next period begins, the digits that receive its energy will change, so we keep this value in an updatable table rather than hard-coding it into the program.
