What are triple digits and four of a kind?
Triple digits (เลขตอง) are three-digit numbers made of a single repeated digit, such as 111, 222 and so on up to 999. Four of a kind (เลขโฟร์) are four-digit numbers made of a single repeated digit, such as 1111 up to 9999. Some people call four of a kind "four identical digits", which means the same thing.
Another group often lumped in with them is four-digit numbers containing three identical digits in a row, such as 1888 or 8880. This group is priced below true triple digits and four of a kind, but still noticeably above ordinary numbers.
What all these groups share is that they are easy to remember and stand out on the road. These are qualities the market values directly, regardless of any numerology text.
Supply is limited by the nature of the plate numbering system
Car plates use numbers from 1 to 9999 within one letter series. That means each series has only nine four-of-a-kind numbers, namely 1111, 2222 and so on up to 9999, and only another nine three-digit triples.
Thinking in proportions makes this clear. A series has almost ten thousand numbers in total, but only nine are four of a kind, which is less than one in a thousand. Rarity at this level is the most straightforward explanation for the price.
Furthermore, once you add the requirements of your preferred province, a vehicle type that matches your car, and a letter series you find acceptable, the number actually available across the whole market may drop to single digits. This is why you sometimes have to wait months for new stock to appear.
Why some triple digits cost far more than others
Even among triple digits, the repeated digit matters a great deal. 888 and 999 sit at a different price level from other triples, because Chinese tradition holds that 8 stands for prosperity and 9 for longevity, and repeating them three times strengthens the meaning.
Conversely, triples of digits that Chinese tradition avoids are priced noticeably lower than the rest of the group. For people who do not follow Chinese beliefs, this is a way to get a rare pattern at a much more accessible price.
For the same triple or four of a kind, the factor that makes the biggest price difference is the letter series. Old two-letter series, and series whose leading digit matches the repeated digit on the plate, are valued especially highly. For example, in the auction for series 3ขข, number 3333 closed at ฿4 million, while 9999 and 8888 in the same series closed at ฿1,339,999 and ฿1,000,000. Province and the digit sum once the letter values are included are secondary factors. Two triple-digit plates with the same number can therefore differ in price several times over. What is the digit sum of triple digits and four of a kind?
Repeated digits make the digit sum of the numbers very easy to work out: a triple is the digit times three, and four of a kind is the digit times four. For example, 888 gives a digit sum of 24 from the numbers, 8888 gives 32 and 9999 gives 36.
An interesting observation is that the digit sums of many repeated numbers fall into groups that Thai numerology texts grade as good, which adds another layer of demand. But do not forget that the plate's true digit sum must also include the values of the letter series and its leading digit, so the final figure differs from a quick mental calculation.
If the digit sum is your main concern, check that plate's true digit sum on its detail page rather than working it out from the numbers alone, because the letter series can shift the sum of the same number by several points.
Is it worth paying for triple digits or four of a kind?
If you value standing out, memorability and resale potential, the answer is usually yes, because this group has the highest liquidity in the market and finds a buyer much faster than ordinary numbers.
But if what you mainly value is a good fit according to the texts, paying a premium several times over for the pattern of the digits may not be money well aimed, because plates with a good digit sum that avoid your Kalakini (the letters considered inauspicious for your birth day) can be found at much lower prices.
A helpful question for deciding is this: if nobody ever saw your car's plate, would you still want this number? If the answer is yes, you are buying because you genuinely like it. If the answer is no, you are paying for how other people see it, which is not wrong, but you should know what you are paying for.
More affordable alternatives that still look good
A mirrored number (เลขหาม) is a four-digit number whose first and last digits match and whose middle digits match, such as 1221, which reads the same backwards. It is almost as easy to remember as a repeated number but costs much less.
An alternating number (เลขสลับ) switches back and forth between two digits, such as 1212, while paired digits repeat in pairs, such as 1122. Both have a clear rhythm when read and look orderly.
A sequential run (เลขเรียง) counts up or down continuously, such as 1234 or 4321. This group is among the easiest to remember and usually has a usable digit sum.
A round thousand (เลขพัน) ends in three zeros, such as 1000 or 2000. It looks clean and is very easy to remember, and its price is usually clearly more accessible than repeated numbers. You can browse actual listings for every pattern from the category pages on this site.

FAQ on this topic
How many four-of-a-kind numbers are there?
Each letter series has only nine: 1111, 2222, 3333, 4444, 5555, 6666, 7777, 8888 and 9999. Even multiplied by the number of series and provinces, that is still very few compared with demand. This is the main reason for the price.
Does a triple inside a four-digit number, such as 1888, count as a triple?
The market usually calls it a trailing triple: three repeated digits but not the whole number. It costs less than true triples and four of a kind but more than ordinary numbers, and it is a good option for people who like the feel of repeated digits but whose budget does not stretch further.
Can I buy triple digits as a speculative investment?
We do not give investment advice and do not guarantee that prices will rise. What can be said factually is that this group has higher liquidity than ordinary numbers because more people want them, but prices still depend on market conditions at the time, like any other asset.
