The digit sum affects price, but as a secondary factor
The main drivers of plate prices are the number pattern and the letter series, followed by province and vehicle type. The numerology digit sum is a secondary factor that depends on belief. It is not a measurable property of the plate, but it does affect real prices, because a number of buyers believe in it and are willing to pay more.
No research in Thailand has yet measured the size of the price premium from the digit sum. What exists is observation of dealers' asking prices: large dealers put popular digit sums such as 9, 14, 15, 19, 24 and 42 next to the price, but the spread within the same number set is much smaller than the effect of the letter series.
How the digit sum is calculated, and where schools disagree
The digit sum is the sum of the series prefix digit, the values of the letters and every digit, with letters converted to numbers using a Thai numerology table. For example, 2กต 9898 gives 40. Some schools add only the digits, so the results differ. The letter value tables of the various schools mostly agree, but some letters, such as ฌ and ฬ, are grouped differently by different schools.
This site's calculator uses the table published on our calculation page and shows the value of every character so you can check it yourself, which lets you compare with the school you follow. The step-by-step method is in the article on how to calculate a plate's digit sum, and the meanings of popular digit sums are in the article on the top 10 digit sums.
How much the digit sum affects prices in the Thai market
An example from one dealer's asking prices on 29 September 2026: single-digit 5 plates in neighbouring new series, 4ขง 5 through 4ขฌ 5, were listed from ฿299,000 down to ฿265,000, a spread of about 11 percent. This includes every reason prices differ, the digit sum among them, and it is still several times smaller than the spread between series.
People who study this market estimate that a good digit sum adds about 10 to 20 percent within the same group. This figure is an inference from asking prices, not a statistical measurement, and this site's price calculator does not add it to the market median. Buyers who believe in digit sums should treat it as a premium they decide on themselves, not a price set by the market.
The digits 8, 9 and 4
The digit 9, which signifies progress, is popular among Thais, and the digit 8, which sounds like the word for rich, is popular among Thai Chinese. An auction example is 9กก 8888, which closed at ฿8,888,888 in December 2022. Research in Hong Kong found that the digit 8 raises prices and the digit 4 lowers them significantly.
In Thailand the digit 4 is not strongly avoided; for example, 4ขณ 444 was listed at ฿499,004. But research in Malaysia found that although non-Chinese bidders do not pay a premium for lucky numbers, they still apply the same discount for unlucky numbers as Chinese bidders, because they consider resale. Buyers who do not believe in the digit 4 should therefore allow a small discount when reselling.
Kalakini letters and personal meaning
Kalakini (กาลกิณี) letters, the letters considered inauspicious for a given birth day, are a personal belief. Each school defines them differently, so a plate's value varies from buyer to buyer, but the effect on overall market prices is small. The Kalakini table this site uses is in the article on Kalakini by birth day.
Personal meaning in the text, such as a word plate that matches the buyer's name or business, adds value only for that buyer, and can create abnormal prices when two or more people compete, which a price model cannot capture. Sellers and buyers should distinguish whether the price they see is a market price or a price tied to one buyer's particular wants.
Evidence from abroad
Research on Hong Kong personalised plates, covering 30,054 items from 134 auction rounds between 2006 and 2018, found that the clarity of the message, emotion and humour affect what buyers are willing to pay more than belief does. The researchers concluded that the premium from vanity, positive attitude and belief is relatively small.
This conclusion is for the Hong Kong market, not a measurement in Thailand, but it points in the same direction as Thai asking prices: belief has a real effect, but it is a smaller premium than rarity and the clarity of the plate. Details of the research are in the article on plate price research abroad.

FAQ on this topic
What percentage extra should I pay for a good digit sum?
There is no fixed formula, and no Thai research has measured it yet. People who study the market infer from asking prices that a good digit sum adds about 10 to 20 percent within the same group, which is an estimate, not a statistic. If you believe in digit sums, treat it as a premium you decide on yourself within your budget, not a market median.
Does the digit 4 make a plate harder to resell?
In Thailand the digit 4 is not strongly avoided, but research in Malaysia shows that buyers who do not believe in unlucky numbers still apply a discount because they think about resale. So allow a small discount if you plan to resell.
Why is the digit sum on this site different from other places?
Because schools group some letters differently, and some schools do not count the letter series or the series prefix digit. This site keeps its letter value table in a versioned file, publishes it on our calculation page, and shows every addition so you can check it.
