What is the special word series?
A standard car plate consists of a two-letter series and a number, for example a pair of Thai letters followed by four digits. Special word series plates (หมวดลักษณะพิเศษ) replace the letter series with a word that reads with a meaning, such as เฮง (prosperous), รวย (rich) or มงคล (auspicious). These plates are produced and put up for auction by the Department of Land Transport (DLT); they are not plates any seller makes themselves.
What sets this group apart from ordinary auction plates is that the value does not lie in the number alone, but in the word too. With ordinary auction plates, people compete over the number, such as triple digits or four of a kind. With special word plates, the word on the plate is what people read first, and it is what makes the plate instantly recognisable without even reading the digits.
Another point to understand from the start is that these plates are very limited in number, depending on the rounds put up for auction, and not every word is available in every province or for every vehicle type. Rarity at this level drives the price directly, even more than the meanings in the numerology texts.
Words actually found in our inventory
As of the date this article was updated, our inventory holds 82 special word series plates covering 27 different words. All of them are plates for passenger cars registered in Bangkok, which reflects the real market: this group is concentrated mainly among private passenger cars in the capital.
Grouped by meaning, there are four main groups. Fortune and wealth is the largest, with the words เฮง (prosperous), เฮงเฮง (double prosperous), เฮงดี (prosperous and good), เฮงรวย (prosperous and rich), รวย (rich), ร่ำรวย (wealthy), มั่งคั่ง (affluent), โชคดี (good luck), ดวงดี (good fortune), เจริญ (flourishing) and ฉลุย (smooth sailing). Merit and calm has บุญ (merit), มีบุญ (blessed), มงคล (auspicious), สุข (happiness) and เย็น (cool, calm). Love and charm has รัก (love), ที่รัก (darling), ชอบ (like), สวย (beautiful), สุดสวย (gorgeous) and หล่อ (handsome). Honour and victory has เอก (first, foremost), ชัย (victory) and หงส์ (swan). There are also words that do not fit clearly into any group, such as พรพร (blessings) and ทะเล (sea).
The word with the most listings in the inventory is หงส์ with 9, followed by โชคดี with 7 and รวย with 6, then เฮง and ชอบ with 5 each. Words such as มงคล, เฮงดี, สวย, เย็น and ที่รัก have only one listing each, which is a normal picture for this market, where stock for each word arrives unevenly.
On price, 76 listings show a price, starting at ฿879,000 and reaching ฿13,189,000, with a median for the group of about ฿3,289,000. The other 6 listings are price on request because their status must be confirmed first. All of these figures are a snapshot of the inventory at the time the article was updated, and they change as stock comes and goes.
Why prices are so much higher than ordinary plates
The first reason is genuinely limited supply. Only a few auspicious words are used, and each word has only a certain number of numbers to choose from. Once you add the requirements of a word you like, a number you like and a vehicle type that matches your car, the number actually left to choose from often drops to single digits. The wide price range in our inventory, from the high hundreds of thousands to over ten million baht, therefore reflects the differences in rarity between words.
The second reason is the auction mechanism. These plates are allocated through auction from the outset, with high starting prices of ฿500,000 to ฿1,500,000 depending on the number group. Secondary numbers therefore often close at around 1 to 1.5 times the starting price, while standout numbers with many bidders can close several times higher, such as รวย 9999, which closed at about ฿18.5 million in 2022. When plates reach the secondary market, prices are referenced from that original base plus the demand that arises afterwards. The table of starting prices for each group is in our article on auction starting prices.
The third reason is image value. A plate that reads as a word is instantly memorable, so many business owners see it as an investment in their image rather than a vehicle expense. Demand driven by this reason helps hold prices at a high level.
How to read the meaning when a plate has both a word and a number
Special word plates have two layers to read. The first is the word, which reads literally and needs no interpretation: anyone who sees เฮง understands it the same way immediately. The second is the number, which can still be read with the usual principles of numerology, both the digit sum and the adjacent digit pairs.
The thing to be careful about is calculating the digit sum. Because the word on the plate is not an ordinary two-letter series, counting consonant values does not follow the formula used for ordinary plates, and different schools calculate it differently. Some count every consonant in the word, while others look only at the digits. The safest approach is to take the digit sum from the digits as the main reference, and treat the word as a meaning read literally without converting it into a number.
Another point people overlook is Kalakini (กาลกิณี), the letters traditionally considered inauspicious for a person's birth day. When a plate uses a word in place of the letter series, the consonants on the plate are still Thai consonants. Those who follow the Taksa (ทักษา) system strictly should therefore check whether the consonants in the word fall in their Kalakini group. All of this is belief from traditional texts, not a guarantee of results, and those who give more weight to Chinese tradition may not consider it an issue.
What to know before you decide
First, check that the vehicle type matches what is stated in your registration book, not the shape of your vehicle. All the plates in this group in our inventory are for passenger cars. If your vehicle is registered as another type, the same number and word cannot be used across types under the regulations.
Second, plan your documents and timing fully. High-value plates are usually tied to procedures that require thorough verification of identity and ownership. If your vehicle is still under a hire-purchase agreement, contact the finance company about the registration book before you pay a deposit, because this step takes the longest in the process. Always check the related fees with the Department of Land Transport first, because the rates can be revised.
Third, set a clear budget before you start looking. This market always has something more beautiful if you are willing to pay more, and the very wide price range makes it easy to raise your ceiling without noticing. Deciding from the start which word you want, the price range you can accept and which conditions you are willing to relax helps you reach a decision and avoid regrets later.
Who these plates suit, and are there alternatives?
This group suits people who put memorability and image first, such as business owners whose car is part of their brand image, and collectors looking for items that are genuinely limited in number.
On the other hand, if your main goal is a good fit according to numerology, an ordinary letter series auction plate with a good-grade digit sum that does not clash with your Kalakini usually meets that goal more directly and at a much lower budget. Most of the extra money paid for a special word plate is for rarity and image, not for the quality of the number according to the texts.
A middle option many people choose is an auction plate whose letter series sounds like an auspicious word when read aloud, which gives a similar feel at a more accessible price. The question that helps most in deciding is this: do you want people who read your plate to remember the word, or the number? The answer tells you where to spend your budget.

FAQ on this topic
Where can I buy a special word series plate?
The original source is the Department of Land Transport auctions, which are held in rounds with limited numbers. Once an auction round has passed, the only way to obtain one is through the secondary market, by taking a transfer of the right from the previous holder, which is the channel the plates in our inventory are in. Always check the number's status with the Department of Land Transport before deciding.
Why do special word plate prices vary so much?
They vary with the popularity of the word, the attractiveness of the number paired with it, and how many remain on the market. In our inventory the price range for this group spans from the high hundreds of thousands to over ten million baht, with a median of just over ฿3 million. Words with little stock in circulation and numbers with a standout pattern are always at the top end of the range.
Can I use a special word plate on a pickup truck or van?
It depends on which vehicle type that plate was allocated for, and that type must match what is stated in your vehicle's registration book. Numbers cannot be used across vehicle types under the regulations. The plates in this group in our inventory at the time of updating this article are all for passenger cars.
Does the word on the plate affect the digit sum calculation?
Different schools calculate it differently. Some count the value of every consonant in the word in the digit sum, while others look only at the digits. We recommend taking the digit sum from the digits as the main reference for consistent comparison, and treating the word on the plate as a meaning read literally. All of this is belief from traditional texts, not a guarantee of results.
